MIDDLETOWN >> A big gamble on fourth-and-1 at their own 35-yard line paid big dividends for the Middletown Mustangs in a 15-0 North Central League I football win over the visiting Fort Bragg Timberwolves on Friday night at Bill Foltmer Field.

In other junior varsity action on Friday, Kelseyville turned back the Cloverdale Eagles 20-14 behind a big night from quarterback Alex Garcia.

At Middletown, the Mustangs rolled the dice on a fourth-and-one at their 35 in the second quarter and quarterback Luke Holt’s slant pass to Jordan Hernandez not only picked up the first down, but resulted in a 65-yard touchdown that provided Middletown with its first points of the game.

“We spread ‘em out and he (Hernandez) caught the pass and was off,” Middletown coach Tony Hart said.

Middletown added two points to its lead in the third quarter when Nick Tillman tackled a Fort Bragg player in the end zone for a safety to make it 8-0. The Mustangs scored a touchdown later in the quarter on Tristan Carlisle’s 1-yard run.

Carlisle (15 carries for 94 yards) and Drake Harbison (14 for 86) anchored Middletown’s rushing attack. Holt completed six of eight passes for 91 yards.

The Mustangs’ leader on defense was middle linebacker Colton Hall with 10 tackles.

Middletown is 3-0 in league and 4-1 overall.

K’ville 20, Cloverdale 14

At Kelseyville, Knights quarterback Alex Garcia passed for 90 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed for a third score, breaking loose on a 78-yard run, to power Kelseyville to its second league win in three games.

J.D. Prescott and Johnny Mondonca anchored the Kelseyville defense. Prescott had 13 unassisted tackles, four assists and a sack while Mendonca had nine solo stops and four assists as well as two tackles resulting in negative yardage.

Kelsyeville is 4-2 overall.
