BOONVILLE >> A 7-1 loser to Upper Lake earlier this month at Upper Lake, the Anderson Valley Panthers won a close and physical battle in the rematch Wednesday, edging the Cougars 2-1 in North Central League II girls’ soccer action in Boonville.

“It wasn’t the same Anderson Valley team we faced two weeks ago,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said. “It’s their homecoming week and they wanted the game a lot more than we did.”

Contested in 94-degree heat, it also proved to be a battle of attrition for both sides.

“We only had two reserves,” Robbins said. “I’m proud of the girls for stepping it up in that heat.”

Anderson Valley scored the game’s first goal on a penalty kick, that in the first half. Upper Lake pulled even six minutes into the second half on a goal by Julia Mooney, which was assisted by Cheyanne Obedoza. The Panthers broke the tie about 10 minutes later.

Keeper Jazlyn Bonilla was the star of the game for Upper Lake, according to Robbins.

“She played a very outstanding game,” Robbins said. “She saved 11 of 13 shots on goal.”

Upper Lake has a bye on Friday before returning to action Wednesday at home against Tech High School of Rohnert Park. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
