Lake County >> Police arrested a suspected drunk driver who sustained major injuries in a Thursday night incident.

Jerry Elkins, 58, suffered blunt force trauma after crashing into a wrought iron fence off of Highway 20, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol. Elkins was driving a Dodge.

The Clearlake Oaks resident was traveling eastbound at about 9:15 p.m. at an unknown speed around Bartlett Springs Road. He reportedly crossed into the westbound lane and hit the driver’s side of a Cadillac driven by Benjamin Russel, 19. Elkins then veered off the north side of the highway and hit the fence.

Rusell had minor bruising to his ribs and cuts and scrapes on his left hand and arm. His passenger, Trevor Wilson, 22, emerged unscathed, the report stated.

Elkins was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI before being transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital due to his injuries.
