LAKEPORT >> Staff and students of Lucerne Elementary School wanted to help the victims of September’s tragic Valley Fire. They decided to host a school-wide coin drive and make a contest out of it.
For two weeks in early October, jars were placed in each of the 12 classrooms and students brought in coins — and in some cases, dollars — and filled jars. Several classes required additional jars to fit all of the money they donated. Overall, the school was able to raise nearly $800 for the cause.
“We weren’t sure how much we’d be able to raise. Our tiny school only has 260 students. The amount of money raised exceeded our expectations,” explained Jen Wangberg, teacher and activities coordinator.
Ms. Gutierrez’ first graders earned the root beer float party by donating the most money. They brought in $185.65. “We were glad to be able to help in some way,” said Wangberg. “The amount of money the students raised was very impressive, and we are proud of them.”
The idea took off after activities coordinators at the school put together a digital presentation about the Valley Fire for each teacher to show their class. The presentation included photographs of the fire, as well as data regarding how many people lost their homes and belongings. Many of the students had not seen the photos or heard the information, so it was quite impactful for them and they were inspired to give what they could.
The money was donated to the Lake County Wildfire Relief Fund through the Mendo-Lake Credit Union.
