Clearlake >> Representatives from several support agencies are going to be on hand at the Highlands Senior Service Center during the month of November.
The Redwood Caregivers Resource Center will be presenting its monthly training and support workshops for caregivers of older adults who are suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and their related disorders.
This series is held at 1 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. The next workshop will be held on Nov. 17. The video will be “Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter,” an Oscar-nominated documentary of one woman’s experience caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s Disease. The discussion will be about living with ambiguous loss and anticipatory grief, adjusting to new ways of interacting with a cognitively-impaired loved one, setting realistic expectations and the importance of self-care to manage stress and remain flexible. Call 1-800-834-1636 to reserve a seat.
With the Medicare Open Enrollment Period ending on Dec. 7, Highlands Senior Service Center would like to remind everyone that the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) offers free-of-charge Medicare counseling appointments for Medicare beneficiaries who have questions about insurance issues and their health care coverage. For more information about Medicare coverage, call HICAP at 1-800-434-0222 to schedule a free counseling appointment.
Senior peer counselors from Konocti Senior Support are available on Thursdays at Highlands Senior Service Center starting at 12:30 p.m. Senior peer counselors are volunteers who have received training from a licensed therapist and are trained on older adult issues. Volunteers help seniors who are grieving a loved one, facing serious illness, struggling with memory loss, caregiving for loved ones, worried about their future or just needing someone to listen. Seniors experiencing difficulties are welcome to drop in and chat with someone who understands their concerns.
Hospice Services of Lake County representative Kathleen Bradley is available at Highlands Senior Center for walk-in consultations every Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Anyone who is experiencing grief or loss is welcome and encouraged to stop in and speak with Bradley.
Hospice Services of Lake County is also presenting its annual Hope for the Holidays workshop at Highlands Senior Center on Nov. 19 from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Any holiday or special occasion can be difficult for those suffering a loss, and the Hope for the Holidays workshop addresses how to turn traditions from a time of sadness and loneliness into healing rituals. Call (707) 263-6270 for information on Hope for the Holidays or any of the services provided by Hospice Services of Lake County.
