The best may be yet to come for the Upper Lake High School football program after a remarkable turnaround season in 2015. After going winless in 2013 and ’14, the Cougars won the North Central League III co-championship this year with a 7-1 record that included six straight wins. They earned a berth in the Redwood Bowl, a game matching the top two NCL III finishers, and while a 32-18 loss to Anderson Valley wasn’t the ending Upper Lake head coach Frank Gudmundson had in mind, he said the team is looking forward to 2016 when all but five players on this year’s roster, only three of whom are starters, return. Upper Lake’s goal next season is pretty simple, according to Gudmundson. “We want to be right back here (in the Redwood Bowl.”
