CLEARLAKE OAKS >> A Clearlake man died as a result of a Thursday morning collision on Highway 20. The incident occurred west of the Island Drive intersection in Clearlake Oaks.

According to investigating officers from the California Highway Patrol, the victim was traveling west in a Hyundai on Hwy. 20 at approximately 6:50, rounding final curve around the keys. The second vehicle, a Kenworth semi-trailer, approached from the opposite direction.

Both were driving within posted speed limits.

Authorities have yet to determine the reason, but the Hyundai collided with the truck on the driver’s side. The impact knocked the car back across its lane onto the shoulder. Although at low speed, the hit was with such force that the 20-year-old, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, died at the scene.

The driver of the semi, 58-year-old Ralph Lucero of Redwood Valley, complained of pain but was otherwise uninjured.

Lucero maintained control, skidding to a stop in the eastbound lane.

The accident remains under investigation. Any witnesses are encouraged to contact the Clear Lake Area CHP office.
