SANTA ROSA >> Kelseyville High School’s Andre Williams won the North Central League I varsity boys’ race on Wednesday during the Coastal Mountain Conference Cross Country Championships at the 3.0-mile Spring Lake course in Santa Rosa.
While Williams, a freshman, wasn’t the overall winner in a CMC field that included runners from the NCL II, including the powerful Sonoma Academy boys’ squad, he helped lead the Knights to the NCL I team championship along with teammates Roberto Lozano who finished second behind Williams, and Kevin Sanchez, who came in fifth.
Times and final standings weren’t available at the meet, according to Kelseyville coach Ernest Woodson, who said he was supposed to receive them either later Thursday night or early Friday.
“I’m really excited about it,” Woodson said of the Kelseyville boys claiming the NCL I title. “All our varsity boys ran real well today.”
Kelseyville and Clear Lake entered the CMC Championships in a flat-footed tie for first place at the end of the dual-meet season.
In the NCL I girls’ race, Amelia Wirt of Fort Bragg came in first, Tiyanna Meese of Middletown was second and Clear Lake’s Meghan Beare came in third. Lower Lake’s Aleia Milano did not run.
Other top finishers from Lake County were Grace Southern of Middletown in ninth place, Kailei Foltmer of Middletown in 11th place, Laurel Weller of Kelseyville in 13th, and Rainey Vanoven of Clear Lake in 14th.
“She ran well,” Clear Lake coach Peter Stanley said of Beare. “And that was a real good race for Rainey. Laurel always beats her and they ran neck and neck today. It was a sprint the final 200 yards to the finish line and Laurel just beat her.”
The next stop for most of Lake County’s runners are the North Coast Section Championships on Nov. 21 at Hayward High School.
“We might take a full boys’ and girls’ team for the first time in like 10 years,” Stanley said of Clear Lake.
The NCS meet is the qualifier for the CIF State Championships on Nov. 28 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
