REDDING >> The Shasta Historical Society announced the release of its annual publication “The Covered Wagon.” This year’s publication features Pine Street School and an article about beloved teacher, Mary Abrott by Anne Peterson.

Readers will get a teacher’s point of view, as well as a student’s. Included in this year’s edition is the return of poetry to The Covered Wagon. As well as an article about Shasta County and Hollywood; a hanging in Castella; and the origins of the wrecking ball.

The Covered Wagon is available at the Shasta Historical Society in the downtown promenade or online at www.shastahistorical.org for $15. The Society is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m through Christmas. Society members will receive a free copy of the book and have a chance to meet the authors at the release party on Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the I.O.O.F. Hall, located at 1445 Butte Street in downtown Redding. Membership can be purchased at the Society or at the release party.

The Shasta Historical Society was formed on Jan. 18, 1930. Over the years the organization’s mission evolved to better serve the community of Shasta County by actively working to promote and communicate local history. Today, the Shasta Historical Society serves as the largest non-university center for historical research in California north of Sacramento.
