LAKE COUNTY >> The Lake County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting today to consider rewarding a contract to AshBritt worth more than $17 million. The deal would mitigate hazardous, fire-damaged trees on or near county property.

If approved, the company would be required to begin work within three days after the county gives it a notice to proceed.

Lake County Public Information Officer Jill Ruzicka said that controversy isn’t expected at the meeting.

“We’re holding the special meeting because they need to get the contracts signed as soon as possible,” she said. “That way the company can start next week.”

A Florida-based company, AshBritt specializes in disaster response and recovery service, it’s most famous job being the cleanup of Hurricane Katrina.

According to Director of Public Works Scott Deleon, the county received five proposals to do the work and found AshBritt to be the most qualified.

Funded by FEMA, the Federal Highway Administration, local funding, and the California Disaster Assistance Act, the project’s cost was estimated at $17,385,000.

The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m.
