Lakeport >> Several residents have recently been victims of gasoline thefts from vehicles.
Lakeport Police Lt. Jason Ferguson said the three incidents have been concentrated on Parallel Drive near the Department of Motor Vehicles, calling them random hits.
An unknown suspect or suspects have been taking fuel mostly at night. Residents have woken up to find several gallons of gas missing the next morning.
Their vehicles have also been vandalized, Ferguson said the damage is more than likely a result the process of stealing the gas. Evidence suggests the procedure used is not at all sophisticated.
The police department is investigating the crimes, and Ferguson said they will saturate the area with extra patrols in the meantime.
He said residents should make sure to secure their vehicles, and suggested locking gas caps for extra assurance.
The Lakeport Police Department posted notice of the thefts on its Facebook page Thursday afternoon, asking residents to call (707) 263-5491 if they see any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods to investigate.
