RICHMOND >> Too many unforced errors began the avalanche of Salesian points that led to the Pride’s 82-37 victory over the Middletown Mustangs in non-league varsity girls’ basketball action on Tuesday night in Richmond.
“We really didn’t play bad basketball in the first half,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said of the 48-23 deficit the Mustangs faced at halftime in their season debut. “But unforced errors really kill you. It takes points away from you and puts the ball in the open court and lets them score some easy points.”
Salesian outscored Middletown 29-13 in the second quarter and 26-10 in the final period to account for most of the 45 points that separated the two schools.
Middletown also struggled at the free-throw line, according to Bazzano, who said his team, winners of 20 games last season, has a lot of work to do before its next game Tuesday at home against Terra Linda of San Rafael.
“We got our butts whipped by a good team,” Bazzano said. “Now we’ve got a week to get ready for our next game.”
Emily Lescher’s nine points led the Mustangs. Ashlyn Welton, Abby Aden and Kaleigh Alves added eight points apiece.
Salesian defeated Middletown 60-44 last year in the Mustangs’ season opener at Middletown.
The Pride also beat Middletown in junior varsity action.
