COLUSA >> Once the Clear Lake Cardinals settled down on offense and began to find the range, they rolled past Sutter High School 56-24 in the varsity girls’ bracket Friday night at the Colusa Tournament.

The win puts Clear Lake (1-1) into today’s consolation championship game against either Wheatland or Lindhurst at 4:30 p.m.

Clear Lake sputtered on offense in the first quarter and led just 8-4 after the opening period. The next two quarters were completely different as the Cardinals rolled out 21 points and 23 points to take a 52-21 lead into the final period.

“We were doing nothing more than running the offense, being patient and looking for that good shot,” Clear Lake coach Kory Reynolds said.

With several new players on the roster, the Cardinals are still getting to know each other and Reynolds said that is one reason why the team has struggled in the first quarter in each of its first two games this season.

“They seem to be really apprehensive at the start,” Reynolds said.

Camille Donald scored 12 of her 16 points — all 3-pointers — in the third quarter while Taylor Helms scored 12 of her team-leading 18 in the third quarter, including two 3-pointers. Vanessa Hutton added nine points.

“It was a really good team effort,” Reynolds said.
