MIDDLETOWN >> New wrestlers or those with limited high school experience participated in the Coastal Mountain Conference Novice Tournament on Saturday at Middletown High School where medals were awarded down to three places in all boys’ and girls’ weight classes.
All of the Lake County schools participated and no one did better than Kelseyville, which sent 18 wrestlers and came away with 13 medals and nearly a 14th.
“It’s a good group of kids, there’s no problem child,” Kelseyville coach Rob Brown said. “They’re fun to work with and they work hard.”
The Knights’ medal count featured four firsts, five seconds and four thirds. Weight class winners were Korbin Marlin (101 pounds) among the girls and Mike Beverlin (106), Alex Garcia (130) and Jovany Carrillo among the boys. Seconds went to Brianna Thomas (111), Jason Gentle (130), Malcolm Moore (135), Tony Velasquez (140) and Javante Gregoire (175). Earning thirds were Kylie Martin (101), Sabrinna Lacoy (111), Vanessa Gonzalez (152) and Bryce Mandeville (120).
Just missing a medal was Maylena Landa, fourth at 117 pounds.

Weight division winners among the boys were Junior Fernandez at 120 pounds, Jerrod Ankeny at 145 pounds and Nick Warner in the heavyweight division, and Chelsea Valdez in the 137-pound girls’ division.
Two Upper Lake girls — Christina Wilson and Adrianna Lopez — wrestled in the boys’ division and Wilson, a state qualifier a year ago, finished second to teammate Fernandez in the 120-pound bracket. Lopez placed second in the 112-pound bracket. Another second sent to Daniella Estrada in the girls’ 135-pound division. Isis Martinez was third at 137 pounds.
