MIDDLETOWN >> On a night when Ashlyn Welton and Abby Aden missed most of the second quarter in foul trouble, Makenzi Smith of the Middletown Mustangs picked up the slack and then some in a 67-15 non-league varsity girls’ basketball win over visiting Terra Linda of San Rafeal.

Smith scored 23 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Mustangs squared their season record at 1-1.

“She’s an inside-outside threat,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said of the junior Smith, who finished the first half with 16 points. “She’s big and strong and comfortable in the paint and shooting from the outside.”

Smith also dished out six assists and pulled down five rebounds for the Mustangs, who never gave up more than five points in any one quarter.

“We were pretty tough all night on defense,” Bazzano said.

Middletown led 35-9 by halftime.

While Welton and Aden had to ride the bench early in the game because of foul trouble, they both scored in double digits. In fact, Welton had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while Aden finished with 10 points. Emily Lescher added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists and Kaleigh Alves had eight points to go along with a team-best seven steals.

“The girls did a good job,” Bazzano said.

Middletown returns to action Thursday against Lincoln of San Francisco in the opening round of the Tamalpais Tournament in Mill Valley. Tip-off is 5 p.m.

“Lincoln is as good as we’re going to see the rest of the way,” Bazzano said.

Lincoln is 3-1.
