PEBBLE BEACH >> Kelseyville played three playoff-caliber teams in three days at the Stevenson Tournament in Pebble Beach and came away with two victories and an overtime loss this past weekend.

A 59-48 win over tournament host Robert Louis Stevenson in the third-place game on Saturday night capped a solid trip for the Knights, according to varsity boys’ basketball head coach Scott Conrad.

“It was a good tournament for us and we represented ourselves well,” Conrad said. “We plan on going back there next year.”

Argonaut High School of Jackson, the only team to beat Kelseyville during the tournament (and so far this season) went on to win the tournament championship.

The Knights’ opponent Saturday, Robert Louis Stevenson, was similar to a team Kelseyville has already played once this season.

“They are similar to Clear Lake in style with good shooters,” Conrad said of the Pirates. “We gave a very good performance to beat them.”

Nick Pfann led Kelseyville (5-1) with 18 points while Kyle Ellis and and Hunter Beatty each had 10. Pfann and Ellis, who also had eight rebounds and five assists, both earned All-Tournament awards.

Kelseyville led 26-19 at halftime and 46-35 after three quarters.

The Knights are off until Thursday when they play Lower Lake in the first round of the 22nd annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic at Middletown.

In other boys’ action Saturday:

Cloverdale 67, Clear Lake 28

At Cloverdale, the host Cloverdale Eagles routed Clear Lake in the championship game of the John McMillan Holiday Invitational.

Tanner Hutton’s 17 points, 12 of them coming on 3-pointers, led the Cardinals (4-2), who trailed 40-17 by halftime.

No other details were available at press time.

Upper Lake 68, St. Bernard 52

At Potter Valley, the Upper Lake Cougars took advantage of a St. Bernard team that was missing several players because of the school’s continued participation in the football playoffs and won the consolation championship at the Potter Valley Tournament.

Isaac Nevarez led Upper Lake (5-1) with 25 points, 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter as the Cougars outscored the Crusaders 22-10 in the period to put the game away. Nevarez went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.

“We got more aggressive in that fourth quarter and I think they got tired with only six players,” Upper Lake coach Justin Dutcher said.

M’town 44, Sonoma Valley 39

At Sonoma, Jake Rivera’s 14 points and another 12 from Sam Pyzer lifted undefeated Middletown (4-0) to a non-league win over Sonoma Valley.

Pyzer and Gabe Guzman hit key 3-pointers down the stretch and Rivera made two clutch free throws to keep Middletown in front.

Middletown also won the junior varsity game 44-33 behind 14 points from Trey O’Neill, nine from Isaiah Moore and eight from Colton Hall.

Girls’ basketball

Cloverdale 43, Upper Lake 32

At Potter Valley, Cloverdale beat Upper Lake in the third-place game of the Potter Valley Tournament despite 15 points and eight rebounds from the Cougars’ Natalie Karlsson.

It was the second meeting this season between the two teams and Cloverdale’s second win (the first time was 59-33 in the winner’s semifinals of the Stokes Tournament at Kelseyville).

“We played much better against them this time,” Upper Lake coach Mike Smith said. “Natalie hit a couple of her 3s to make it a six-point game with about six minutes to go.”

Upper Lake (4-4) had an opportunity to close the gap during the next three minutes but missed handful of layups, Cloverdale answering with a basket each time.

“That was like an eight-point swing,” Smith said.

“Our focus was to hustle and go after every loose ball and we did that,” Smith said.

Brenna Sanchez had five points for the Cougars and All-Tournament selection Kejhana Taylor finished with four.

Upper Lake plays at Willits tonight.

Clear Lake 39, Swett 30

At Healdsburg, Taylor Helms scored 14 points and Valerie Hutton added 10 as the Clear Lake Cardinals beat Swett of Crockett in the consolation championship game of the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Clear Lake (5-2) led 24-8 at halftime.

No other details were available at press time.

Benicia 52, Lower Lake 46

At St. Helena, Benicia defeated Lower Lake in the championship game of the Sutter Home Tournament, dropping the Trojans to 5-2 on the season.

No other details were available at press time.

M’town 41, Rancho Cotate 35

At Tamalpais, although Middletown’s offense sputtered, the Mustangs’ defense put the clamps on Rancho Cotate in the third-place game of the Tamalpais Tournament.

“They were averaging 65 points a game coming in and we held them to 35,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said.

“We played three quality opponents in that tournament and came out 2-1 after throwing away Friday’s game (a 46-37 loss to Urban of San Francisco), so I’m happy with that,” Bazzano said.

Middletown (3-2) led 21-18 at halftime and 32-24 through three quarters.

“We should have put them away in the first half but I kid you not, we missed seven or eight wide-open layups,” Bazzano said.

All-Tournament selection Ashlyn Welton led the Mustangs with 13 points, 15 rebounds and three steals. Abby Aden and Kaleigh Alves added eight points apiece and Emily Lescher had seven. Makenzi Smith pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out a team-best seven assists to go along with her four ponts.

T.J. Marcks led the victorious Cardinals (6-0) with 14 points while Seth Mix added nine and Brady McGuire eight. Adrian Villalobos powered Kelseyville with 10 points.

In the semifinals earlier Saturday, Clear Lake knocked off Upper Lake 74-53 beind 20 points from Marcks, 13 from Mix and 11 from McGuire. Chris Fecht’s 11 points paced Upepr Lake.
