MIDDLETOWN >> If records are indeed meant to be broken, a few could fall this year at the 22nd annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic junior varsity and varsity boys’ basketball tournament in Middletown.
Before the round-robin tournament ends its three-day run Saturday night at the Middletown High School gym, don’t be surprised if the record for most 3-pointers goes by the wayside. Since the tournament shifted to a four-team format in 2011, the record is 12 in both the junior varsity (Clear Lake’s Max De Leon in 2014) and varsity (Kelseyville’s Brandon Huber in 2012) divisions.
The single-game record for 3-pointers might be a little tougher to beat given that Vince Alderman of Lower Lake (2002) and Dustin Thaxton of Kelseyville (2010) share the varsity mark with nine. The JV record of seven belongs to Middletown’s Matt Giovannoni and was set back in 1999.
Tournament scoring records since the four-team format was adopted in 2011 belong to Clear Lake’s Kyle Donald (2011) in the varsity division with 76 points (25.3 average) and to Clear Lake’s De Leon (2014) in the JV division with 58 points (19.3 average).
Single-game tournament scoring record have been on the books for a few years. Lower Lake’s Alderman holds the varsity record with 37 (2002) and Clear Lake’s Steven Edwards is the JV leader with 31 (2008).
Title-wise, Clear Lake’s varsity and JV teams hold the tournament record for most Hoop Classic championships with seven apiece, which averages out to one every three years since the tournament began in 1994. If Middletown’s varsity repeats as tournament champion this year, the Mustangs will pull even with Clear Lake at seven apiece.
All of the tournament records, individual and team, are listed in the official tournament program on sale at the front gate.
