MIDDLETOWN >> It didn’t take long for the first record to fall during the 22nd annual Record-Bee Hoop Classic boys’ basketball tournament in Middletown.

In the first varsity game matching Kelseyville and Lower Lake, the Knights proved hotter than the surface of the sun in the first half, scoring 57 points en route to a 88-56 victory that broke the tournament record for most points in a single game. The old record of 87 was set in 2007 by Clear Lake and matched by the Cardinals during the same tournament.

Four Knights scored in double figures during the record-setting performance and seven Kelseyville players had seven or more points. Marlon Jones scored 24 points in a losing cause for the Trojans, the highest individual total on day one of the tournament. He sank five 3-pointers as part of his total. Kelseyville’s Gideon Turner had four treys.

In the junior varsity division, by far the best individual performance on Thursday belonged to Clear Lake freshman Brady McGuire, who scored all 19 of his points in the second half of the Cardinals’ 57-43 win over Middletown, a game much closer than the final score indicates. McGuire held off a Middletown charge by sinking a 3-pointer and then converting a three-point play.

Free throw and 3-point contests took place in both the JV and varsity divisions during round two on Friday. Winners were Lower Lake’s Iszzac Carver (free throws) and Guido Boyd (3-pointers) for JVs and Kelseyville’s Nick Pfann (free throws) and Kyle Ellis (3-pointers) for the varsity.
