Hayward artist Robert Ferguson adds the head to a Canada Goose with a body made out of pennies Wednesday morning between 14th and 15th streets in Lucerne. He and wife Lisa Ferguson were commissioned by Burning Man to create this 20-foot-high bird named “Penny” made using 140,000 Canadian and American pennies and was on display at the 2015 gathering in Nevada. A native of Canada, Lisa Ferguson said she and her husband wanted to make something out of Canadian pennies after the country discontinued their use, and added the American pennies after hearing from Burning Man, an event where the couple met eight years ago. When Lake County resident Robert Gardner saw the piece at the American River Music Festival in Lotus, he reached out to the artists asking to bring it to the area. The artwork will be displayed in Lucerne for the next several months before it takes off north for Canada for a summer exhibit. – Berenice Quirino — Lake County Publishing
