KELSEYVILLE >> Fresh off of its bout with the people of Lakeport, Verizon Wireless now plans to put a new cell tower in Kelseyville.

According to the Lake County Planning Commission’s most recent agenda, the proposed site is at 5660 Staheli Drive and would contain a 75-foot tall monopine, 12 eight-foot tall panel antennas, two microwave dishes that are six feet in diameter, and other equipment.

“The proposed wireless facility will provide enhanced 4G LTE network coverage, improving the experience for Verizon customers in and around Kelseyville,” Public Relations Representative Heidi Flato said via email.

But just like Lakeport, some people aren’t thrilled about the prospect of having that kind of facility near their residences.

One of those is Kelsey Creek Brewing owner and new Kelseyville Business Association president Ron Chips, who explained that he is concerned about the site affecting property values in its proximity.

“The people of Kelseyville are very protective of our area,” Chips said. “It’s the wrong use for the lands.”

The purpose for the project wasn’t clear but the potential location of the tower is located near the section of Highway 29 where cell phone reception becomes interrupted. Flato said that Verizon had also received demand from customers.

“We build wireless facilities where we see demand,” she said. “Our goal is to stay ahead of the curve to ensure our network works—when and where our customers need it.”

Without speaking for the KBA, Chips said he personally disagrees, asserting that the tower isn’t a “boon to commerce.” He and his association will meet to discuss the matter at their next meeting in the upcoming weeks at the Saw Shop.

When the planning commission does meet, it will consider a mitigated negative declaration for the project based on the initial study or determine that it will not have significant environmental impacts.

The meeting will take place at 9 a.m. on Jan. 14 at the Lake County Courthouse.
