LOWER LAKE >> Lower Lake’s Trojans made winning look easy on Friday night, crafting a 64-54 victory over St. Helena in North Central League I varsity boys’ basketball action at Lower Lake.
But that doesn’t count style points such as the name of the Lower Lake coach: Shannon Tubbs … or the first slam dunk in who knows how many basketball seasons by a Trojan, one Jerod Alexander. A 6-foot-5 beanpole, Alexander found an open lane leading straight to the basket to do his handiwork in the second quarter and finished with 13 points.
Or a player — Marlon Jones — coming off the bench to score seven points in a matter of seconds at the conclusion of the first quarter. Jones, who is actually a starting guard, provided the spark that pushed Lower Lake to a 13-9 lead after one quarter. It was a lead the Trojans never surrendered.
Jones scored 19 points and and Hoke Wickard followed with 14 as the Trojans improved their league record to 2-0.
Tubbs, a former JV coach has Lower Lake standing at 6-6 overall.
“I think we’re going in the right direction,” he said. “But we’ll take it one game game at a time.”
