LAKEPORT >> Ashlyn Welton and the Middletown Mustangs surged to a 45-30 victory over the Clear Lake Cardinals in North Central League I varsity girls’ basketball action on Friday night in Lakeport.

Welton, who scored career point No. 1,000 on Tuesday in a league-opening win over Lower Lake, led the defending NCL I champions with 14 points. She needs nine more to become the school’s all-time leading scorer for girls and she has a shot at breaking Middletown’s all-time mark of 1,230 held by Tyler Hunt.

Middletown improved to 2-0 in the NCL I standings and 9-4 overall while Clear Lake slipped to 0-2 and 7-6 despite 14 points from Valerie Hutton.

“We were all over the basketball tonight and frustrated the heck out of them,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said of the Mustang defense, which limited Clear Lake’s top scorer on the season, Taylor Helms, to just two points.

“I think we gave her one good look at the basket all night,” Bazzano said. “She’s a good player, but our defefnse really got after her tonight.”

Makenzi Smith had 13 points for the Mustangs and Abby Aden nine.

Middletown led 21-10 at halftime and 33-18 going into the final period.

Clear Lake won the junior varsity game 31-24.
