CLOVIS >> Upper Lake High School freshman 120-pounder Junior Fernandez had an eventful day on Friday during the 39th annual Doc Buchanan Invitational wrestling tournament at Clovis High School in Clovis.
Fernandez, who carried a 9-0 record into one of the most prestigious boys’ wrestling tournaments in the country, scored a 15-0 technical fall over Shayun Saiadpour of Bullard in his first match. Advancing to the round of 16, Fernandez sustained the first loss of his high school career against New Jersey state champion Gerard Angelo of Bergen Catholic High School by 16-1 technical fall.
Needing a win in the consolation bracket to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament and reach the second day of the competition, Fernandez dropped a 9-4 decision to Chris Gaxiola of Buchanan.
Fernandez had won each of his first three tournaments of the season prior to the Doc Buchanan, including the Lou Broznan Invitational in Brentwood late last month.
