MIDDLETOWN >> Ashlyn Welton’s 26 points powered the Middletown Mustangs to a 60-52 non-league varsity girls’ basketball win over Mercy High School of San Francisco on Saturday night in Middletown.

“As good an offensive performance as we’ve had this season,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said of the win over the Skippers (8-7). “It was a good, quality win against a quality opponent.”

Middletown carried a 43-40 lead into the fourth quarter before pushing its lead to as many as 13 points late in the game.

“The final score doesn’t tell the story,” Bazzano said. “We were up by 12 and 13 points a couple of times with a few minutes remaining.”

Middletown had three other players score in double figures besides Welton. Makenzi Smith added 11 points while Abby Aden and Emily Lescher each had 10.

“I don’t usually do that,” Bazzano said of scheduling a non-league opponent during Middletown’s league schedule, “but I might do it again.”

Middletown improved to 12-4 with the win. The Mustangs were home Tuesday to play Fort Bragg in North Central League I action (see the prep roundup for results).
