LOWER LAKE >> Ka-ching!

The Lower Lake Trojans are off to their best North Central League I start in years after dispatching the Cloverdale Eagles, defending league champions, 52-40 in varsity boys’ basketball action on Friday night at Lower Lake.

“These kids are starting to buy in to what we’re trying to do, especially on defense,” Lower Lake coach Shannon Tubbs said.

The Trojans improved to 5-1 in league play and 9-7 overall by limiting Cloverdale’s top two players, Jayson McMillan and Marcus Poe to a combined 20 points.

“The defense the kids played was awesome,” Tubbs said while citing the efforts of such players as Jerod Alexander (14 rebounds, 6 blocks), Reed Diener, Robert Calderon and Robert Garcia.

“He (Alexander) owned the defensive glass and I can’t say enough about how well he played,” Tubbs said. “Defensively the kids played with a fire that I haven’t seen here in a long time.”

Marlon Jones powered another balanced attack by the Trojans with 15 points. Alexander added nine, Hokulani Wickard had eight and both Logan Carlson and Ethan Watson chipped in with seven apiece. Lower Lake hit six more 3-pointers, giving the Trojans 25 in their last three games.

Trailing 25-22 at the half, Lower Lake outscored the Eagles 30-15 in the second half to win its third straight.
