EUREKA >> Members of the Kelseyville High School wrestling team raked in the first-place medals on Saturday during the North Coast Classic at Eureka High School while a trio of Middletown High wrestlers also did well.

Kelseyville sent a handful of girls and junior varsity wrestlers to the tournament and came home with five firsts. Weight class winners among the girls were Kyle Marlin-Ambriz at 101 pounds, Bri Thomas at 116 pounds, and Vanessa Gonzalez at 150 pounds.

For the JVs, Jason Gentle topped the field at 126 pounds while Willie Munoz won the 160-pound weight class.

Kelseyville’s boys took place in the King of the Mat tournament on Saturday in Windsor (see story below).

Middletown High School medalists in the varsity boys’ division at the North Coast Classic included Wyatt Jones, third at 170 pounds. His only loss came in the semifinals to eventual champion Steve Abbott of Orland, who pinned Jones in the second round.

The other Middletown medalists were Quentin Crayne, fourth at 132 pounds; and Cameron Ketchum, sixth at 220 pounds. Crayne, who beat the tournament’s fourth and fifth seeds, trailed by 12 points in one of his matches before turning and pinning his opponent.

“That’s the joy of wrestling,” Middletown coach Brian Hunt said. “It doesn’t matter what the score is.”

Middletown’s wrestlers travel to Upper Lake on Wednesday for a Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet that includes Point Arena. Kelseyville hosts Lower Lake and Fort Bragg in another tri-meet Wednesday. Action at both locations begins at 5:30 p.m.
