VALLEJO >> Girls’ wrestlers from Lower Lake and Middletown high schools were in action over the weekend and they didn’t leave their respective tournaments empty-handed.
Mikelynn Rowe of Lower Lake won the 133-pound division on Saturday during the Vallejo Tournament. Medals were awarded to the top three in each weight class and the Trojans won two. Besides Rowe’s win, Krystal Lockwood secured the third-place medal at 101 pounds.
While Rowe and Lockwood were competing in Vallejo, members of the Middletown team traveled to Pacifica for the Terra Nova Tournament and were rewarded with four medals between the varsity (three) and novice (one) brackets.
In varsity action, Dennae Taylor placed third in the 118-pound division, pinning the fourth seed in the second round of the quarterfinals. She lost to one of the state’s top-ranked wrestlers in the semifinals but bounced back to pin her opponent in the third-place match.
“She wrestled really well,” Middletown coach Brian Hunt said.
The Mustangs added a fourth-place medal at 152 pounds courtesy of Alixe Olson, and a fifth-place medal at 131 pounds where Kailei Foltmer lost in the first round but rallied back into medal contention.
“She had a pretty tough draw in the first round but won her next four matches,” Hunt said.
Carissa Forest added a second-place medal in the 108-pound novice division, going 2-1.
“I’m quite impressed with how the girls wrestled,” Hunt said.
Lower Lake’s wrestlers are back in action Wednesday for a tri-meet at Kelseyville. Middletown’s wrestlers also hit the road Wednesday for a tri-meet at Upper Lake. This coming Saturday the Lower Lake girls go to a tournament in Willits and the Middletown girls head to Loomis for a tournament at Del Oro High School.
