Kelseyville High School wrestlers (from left) Adryan Thomas, Kylie Marlin-Ambriz, Alex Garcia and Jovany Carrillo wield The Shield, a new perpetual trophy that will go to the winner of the Kelseyville-Lower Lake dual meet each season. The winning team will take possession of The Shield and hold it until the following year’s match. The name of the winning school and the final score will be engraved on The Shield each year. The Shield was selected because the mascot for both teams — Knights and Trojans — found it a useful piece of equipment back in the day. The inaugural battle for The Shield takes place tonight when Kelseyville hosts Lower Lake and Fort Bragg in a tri-meet beginning at 5:30 p.m. Kelseyville coach Adam Garcia and Lower Lake head coach Ed Fuchs, both Lower Lake wrestlers at one time under former longtime coach Dan Pastor, thought a perpetual trophy would provide more incentive for wrestlers on both teams. “We were both super competitive when we wrestled,” Garcia said. “It just adds a little more fun to the match. It’s good for everybody.”
