Kelseyville >> The Lake County Rocket Club is revising the requirements for its members. Bill Bordisso, club leader, said in the past three years students’ conflicts with sports and other commitments made scheduling launches difficult because, due to absences, not all students were finished with their rockets at the same time. This year he is requiring that fourth- to eighth-grade students who are interested in participating commit to attending all four sessions and the launch date.
A beginners group will start Feb. 3, and a tentative launch date is set for March 5. No previous experience with rockets is necessary. The rocket club will be limited to 20 students.
The club meets at Taylor Observatory in Kelseyville from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday. The club is free and parents are always welcome to attend. Any student in grades four through eight may participate; home school, private school, charter or public school. Parents must sign a permission slip at the first meeting in order for students to attend.
Bordisso anticipates that veteran student members from previous years will act as assistants.
After this beginners group launches in March, Bordisso will schedule another four week session with another launch to follow. All Lake County Rocket Club members learn about the physics of flight and space history as well as applying math and critical thinking skills in developing their model and preparing for and achieving a successful launch.
