LOWER LAKE >> Something had to give and something did.
In a battle of two teams tied atop the North Central League I junior varsity girls’ basketball standings, the Lower Lake Trojans knocked the Clear Lake Cardinals from the ranks of the unbeaten with a down-to-the-wire 40-39 victory on Tuesday night in Lower Lake.
Vanessa Hughes led all scorers with 22 points, including two 3-pointers, as the Trojans improved to 7-0 in league play and 17-2 overall.
“It was a nailbiter,” Lower Lake coach Dave Milano said. “We knew it was going to be a good game and it was.”
Lower Lake held off Clear Lake (6-1, 16-2) down the stretch.
Grace Davidson’s 15 points powered the Cardinals and Kortnie Reynolds added 12. The two teams meet a final time in Lakeport on Feb. 16, the last day of the regular season.
