Sunday, Jan. 31, Galilee Lutheran Church in Kelseyville will host Rob Wertheim, from the international organization Jews for Jesus. He will present “Christ in the Old Testament.” The service begins at 10 a.m. and will continue for about an hour.
This informative presentation will focus on Old Testament prophecy and the expectations of the Jewish people, who looked to the coming a Messiah, a Savior, who would deliver them from bondage and suffering.
Jews for Jesus believes that Israel exists as a “covenant people” through whom God continues to accomplish His purposes and that the Church is an elect people in accordance with the New Covenant, comprising both Jews and Gentiles who acknowledge Jesus as Messiah and Redeemer.
They believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are divinely inspired, verbally and completely inerrant in the original writings and of supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and life.
They bring a uniquely Jewish perspective to events and issues that Christians only understand from afar. Many of the nuances and subtleties of the Old Testament are lost to those in the Christian faith.
Jews for Jesus is celebrating 40 years of work this September, bringing the Messiahship of Y’shua — or Jesus, as he is known to western peoples — to Jewish people worldwide.
They maintain permanent mission stations in 14 countries and 26 cities world-wide, using a variety of methods to reach their people.
The organization writes and illustrates hand-lettered pamphlets with plenty of humor in an informal, conversational tone. (“We take God seriously but we try not to take ourselves too seriously.”) They hand-deliver more than eight million of these “invitations to interact with the gospel” each year. They’ve produced a few animated features (for instance, “I Thought I Was an Olympic Superstar” and “Jesus Made Me Kosher”), have published evangelistic books (such as “Jewish Doctors Meet the Great Physician”), and books on prophecy (“Future Hope”).
Their magazine Issues is an eight-page evangelistic publication for Jewish seekers. They also conduct “campaigns” during the summer months in New York City, Toronto, Paris, London, Moscow and various other cities throughout the former Soviet Union.
The “Jews for Jesus” staff creates Jewish gospel music and drama as part of their street witnessing. They use newspaper and magazine advertising, billboards, bus and train and radio advertising. Their goal is to “make the messiahship of Jesus an unavoidable issue to Jewish People via the secular media.”
They invite people to contact them through their website, on Facebook and Twitter and anywhere people meet.
