Something overlooked
While Mr. Hall is passing racist aspersions on Republicans with his letter to the editor (RB 1/26/16) (Bottom of the Barrel), implying that Republicans views and practices are now and were in line with the KKK let me take this opportunity to enlighten him of a few facts he seems to have overlooked.
It was the Republicans that helped pass the civil rights legislation back in the 60s with strong opposition the ex Ku Klux Klan member and democrat Senator Robert KKK Byrd. That civil rights legislation over turned the Jim Crow laws that were passed by the southern Democrats originating back in the 1880s.
The Democrat party was also the most associated and the most influenced party by the order of the Ku Klux Klan back in the 1920s and later.
If not for the civil rights legislation getting passed with the help of the Republicans, Barrack Obama might not have ever been in the position to run for the highest office of the land.
Mr. Hall’s assessment of the world’s opinion that the majority of America is still racist is a seriously flawed and stupid comment considering the fact that the overwhelming majority of this country elected a black president for two terms and possibly may elect a second black man or a Latino.
And while we are on the subject of bigots and racists, Planned Parenthood which is endorsed by the Democrat Party and was founded by a racist. Margret Sanger was a outspoken eugenicist who wished to sterilize and segregate anyone with objectionable traits. The majority of Planned Parenthood offices are located in minority neighborhoods across the United States. Seems a little racist to me.
One final note for Mr. Hall and others of his skewed opinion of Republicans. The great Martin Luther King was registered Republican for many years until the Kennedy boys put pressure on him to switch parties.
Thomas Nickel, Lakeport
[Editor’s Note: The two parties were very different in past decades and centuries, so labeling the modern versions as racists or non-racists based upon events of 50 or 100 years ago is dubious, at best. When the northern Democrats of the 1960s began to support the Civil Rights Movement, some party supporters in the south — strongly Democratic in many areas since the Civil War — were cast loose. Richard Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” was a successful effort to bring this disaffected group into the Republican Party. Mr. Nickel makes a valuable point in that both parties and the country have come a long way since the dates he mentioned.]
Lectures
As most people are unaware, for much of this last century, local funeral directors provided ambulance services, for emergencies, until 1970. The “ambulance” equipment was then removed to become a hearse, as needed.
Obviously, California realized that this was a conflict of interest: if mortuaries failed to save a patient, they’d make a larger profit burying their customers, so the incentive wasn’t there.
(This above information is for those of us who don’t want to read those “meaningless lectures,” and makes going back to reading the obituaries/funeral notices more interesting.)

In the running
Well, well guess what?
Ron Rose of Lakeport is also going to run for Supervisor to represent District 4 and the county as a whole. Anthony Farrington and I are good friends, I was friends with his Mother and Dad and have always supported him. I told him a long time ago that I would never run for Supervisor against him as I felt he was doing a good job and could not say anything bad about him. I always supported him.
I feel at this time and minute we have one of the best Board of Supervisors that we have had in a long time. Because we have had some in the past that were good, and some that were bad that wanted to be world rulers. I feel with Farrington’s help I could pick up all the pieces and finalize the projects that he was working on with other board members. I feel I could work with them very well. One thing that I would promise you the voter is that I would always have a common sense attitude and an open door policy. I would set up a very small office in downtown Lakeport and go a couple of days a week to give everyone in my district and in the county a chance to talk face to face regarding their opinions good or bad.
I have been a resident of Lake County for more than 60 years and in business in Lake County; I have made a lot of money and lost a lot of money; been through the mill like a lot of residence here; I am a senior citizen but I would want the support of the whole county.
The main reason for the office is that a lot of senior citizens do not drive or have cars and the only way they can get to town is by bus. I live on Hill Road in Lakeport for approximately 60 years and my phone number is in the phone book. I would be looking for some friends and volunteers to be part of my election campaign. I ran for supervisor when Jess Combs, Ray Couch and Howard Day ran. At that time I only lost by less than 50 votes.
I make a promise to you that I will always remember one thing when it comes to politics, people talk one way and vote another. My promise to you the voter would be that when it comes to politics I would want to be one of us and not one of them. As many supervisors in the past, when they were running said they would do this or that, once they got in office they totally forgot to do what they promised.
I feel right now that Lake County is in very good shape with a good Sheriff, a good District Attorney and a good Community Development Director, and many, many excellent employees, and I would like to be a part of that.
Ron Rose, Lakeport.
