LAKEPORT >> The Willits Wolverines upset the Clear Lake Cardinals 49-39 in North Central League I varsity boys’ basketball action on Thursday nightin Lakeport.

Four players combined to score all of Clear Lake’s points, led by guard Max De Leon’s 21, including five 3-pointers.

“I was fearful of this after playing Kelseyville on Tuesday night,” Clear Lake coach Scott De Leon said. “We played our butts off in that game. Tonight it was completely different. We were flat and we couldn’t get anything going.”

The Cardinals (6-7 league, 14-11 overall) led 13-12 after one quarter, their final lead of the night. They trailed only 32-31 entering the final period but were thoroughly outplayed down the stretch by the Wolverines (4-9).

“Give credit to Willits,” De Leon said. “They could have mailed this game in. They’re near the bottom of the standings. They don’t have a lot to play for except pride.”

Clear Lake won the junior varsity game 69-25 behind 16 points from Lucas Stahr. The Cards are 9-4 in league and 20-4 overall.
