LAKEPORT >> The Lakeport City Council authorized the Parks and Recreation Commission to move forward with its plan to build a downtown walking path at its regular meeting this week.
Put together by Parks and Recreation, the path would center around Library Park and stretch from the Soper Reese Theater to the intersection of High and 16th streets. From Park Street, the trail would meet North Main Street via First and Fifth streets while the route to High Street ventures west on Clearlake Avenue.
According to Public Works Director Mark Brannigan, current funding for the project amounts to $5,000 dollars. The amount came from the Sutter Lakeside Active Living Grant Program, the healthcare facility’s effort “to do something healthy for the community.”
“With that they can also encourage the people who do get out and exercise … to go beyond just the park and put those tennis shoes on,” Brannigan said.
Additional city money may be funneled toward the project but that will be decided at a later time. In the meantime the commission came up with a list of priorities: brass medallion stamps on the path at quarter mile intervals, an informational sign on the northeast corner of Park and First Street, two park benches, and a stretch station.
The station and one of the benches would be located near the Yacht Club; the other will be placed in between Eighth and Ninth Streets on Main.
The vote was unanimous, 5-0.
