The Coastal Mountain Conference wrestling title is up for grabs come Saturday when the CMC Championships take place at Willits High School. While Lower Lake enters as the favorite after posting an 8-0 record during the dual meet season, Fort Bragg, Willits and Middletown, all 6-2, are in the running as well should Lower Lake stumble. Lower Lake needs a first- or second-place finish to clinch the title outright and is guaranteed no worse than a share of the title with a third-place finish. If the Trojans drop below third in the final team standings and either Fort Bragg, Willits or Middletown finish first, that team will be the outright champion. Middletown coach Brian Hunt said he likes his team’s chances because the Mustangs are “a better tournament team than a dual team.” Lower Lake coach Ed Fuchs said several of his wrestlers need to “step up” Saturday for the Trojans to earn some share of the conference title for a second straight year. One of the wrestlers he’ll be counting on is 220-pounder Wyatt Hitchcock (above).
