SANTA ROSA >> Avenging a four-point loss to Roseland Collegiate Prep earlier this season at Upper Lake, the Cougars bounced back with a season-ending 38-31 victory Thursday in junior varsity girls’ basketball action at Santa Rosa.
“The Cougars were on a mission tonight, that was clear,” Upper Lake coach Dani Paige Gudmundson Pena said on the team’s Facebook page. “(We) got behind by a few points in the third (quarter), but that just made them push even harder as a team.”
Julia Mooney’s 14 points led a balanced Upper Lake attack. Delaney Love added 11 points and Cheyanne Obedoza had nine.
Mooney and Love, both sophomores, should be welcome additions on the varsity level next season, according to Gudmunson Pena.
Upper Lake finished 8-5 in league and 10-15 overall.
A handful of JVs are likely to be promoted to Upper Lake’s varsity squad, which is applying for an at-large berth in the North Coast Section Division V playoffs and will learn on Sunday if it is part of the tournament field. If so, the Cougars are likely hit the road Tuesday or Wednesday for a first-round game.
