Lakeport >> Rogers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” is a musical that takes place during World War II on an island in the Pacific. It is a period piece, reflecting the culture and the mores of the 1940s. Costumes and attitudes are true to the time.
“From that point on, this show is new, fast moving and as modern as tomorrow,” said producer Sue Garrett. “We have pulled out all the stops to make this show move at a fast pace. Scene changes, lighting, costumes, dialogue, everything flows. And it’s mic’ed so that there will be no problems hearing anything. We think we have a real classic here.”
South Pacific will open at the Lake County Fairgrounds Little Theatre on March 4 and run through March 20, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
“The music is everything that we all remember. Huge blockbusters like ‘There is Nothing like a Dame,’ ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair,’ ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ … everything is in place to bring back fabulous memories and show young people where all this music originated,” said musical director Cathy O’Connell. “I have loved working on this music. Kids will be blown away.”
The play is a love story, a war story, a musical comedy and a reason to think twice about attitudes.
“With some of our strongest singers, actors and comedians in leading roles, Lake County Theatre Company thinks it has something for everybody. We are expecting big crowds,” said director Suna Flores.
