AMERICAN CANYON >> Olivia Glosser tossed a four-hitter in Middletown High School’s season-opening 3-1 softball loss to American Canyon on Tuesday afternoon in American Canyon.

Glosser struck out five, walked one and allowed only one earned run. She also had one of the Mustangs’ four hits, a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth that cut the Wolves’ lead to 2-1.

“She was moving the ball up and down, inside and out,” Middletown coach Barry Glosser said of his daughter’s pitching day.

American Canyon scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to go up 2-0. Both teams scored a run in the sixth.

“They played really, really good defense,” Glosser said of his team’s first effort in 2016. “I’m really happy with them. They came out against a good team and played well.”

American Canyon (1-1) qualified for the playoffs a year ago during a 14-13 campaign. Middletown went 11-12 in 2015.

Besides Glosser, other Middletown hits went to Hannah Flynn, Mallory Wisely and Angie Shope.

The Mustangs (0-1) return to action Thursday against St. Vincent in Petaluma at 3:30 p.m.
