UKIAH >> Fourteen Terrace School wrestlers from Lakeport brought home 11 medals from the Pomolita Invitational on Saturday in Ukiah.
Sporting perhaps its largest squad ever with 12 boys and 12 girls out for the team this season, Terrace got its 2016 campaign off to a strong start in Ukiah. The Vikings won two first-place medals, four seconds and five thirds.
Mavis Pyorre and Teagan Miller won their respective weight classes. Pyorre went 3-0 with two pins. She beat Juliana Noriega by first-round fall, Carmen Perez of Windsor by third-round fall after building a 12-3 lead, and Bella Vanucci of Pomolita by injury default in the finals. Miller pinned both of her opponents – Alya Halfacre of Eagle Peak and then Isabella Knight of Willits in the finals.
Also for the Terrace girls, Ashley Vasquez finished second while Carlie Green and Merari Alvarez won third-place medals.
For the Terrace boys, Enzo Torres, Jesse Lewis and Sterling Wong all came away with second-place medals while Donald Mingo, Frank Weiler and Blake Moak added third-place medals.
“For only a week of practice before our first tournament, they all did great,” Terrace head coach Steve Fisher said.
