LAKEPORT >> Approximately 600 Seventh through 12th grade students participated in a successful career day event and job fair. Career exploration presentations were offered in intimate sessions on campus, which covered a variety of careers paths. A career fair event was held simultaneously in the auditorium which catered local colleges and numerous career avenues including Army and Marine options in the military, careers in the arts, medicine and local government. Over 60 local agencies and presenters participated. Students were exposed to careers they had not yet heard of. Students left with knowledge of the skills and education they might need to pursue the fields.
The Event Sparked Self-Actualization
Students were exposed to a wide range of careers ranging from water treatment, nursing, to careers in cooking and learning that web designers can wake up and work anywhere. Numerous local agencies shared information about local career options. The numerous alumni presenters helped students leave with the awareness that one can be from Lake County and become a success.
Students had opportunities with the help of the talented teaching staff to wrap up what they had learned throughout the day. When surveyed, many students were able to identify behaviors they can focus on right now that will have an impact on their ability to also be a success. Students voiced appreciation of being able to speak frankly with presenters and learning that the road to success was not always smooth sailing.
Students, staff, and community members all voiced excitement about this event being offered annually. The career fair presenters themselves shared excitement about new ideas they gleaned from fellow presenters to make their displays more enticing to student and create more buzz.
Many Thanks to the Supportive Community
An event of this nature and size does not happen without the support of our local community. A special thanks to Adam Evans for his help with coordinating the CLHS event, also to the Lakeport Rotary Club for their support and to all the speakers, agencies, and volunteers who dedicated their time to make it a success.
