
WILLITS >> Terrace Middle School sent 16 wrestlers to compete in the Baechtel Grove Middle School Wrestling Tournament on Tuesday in Willits and came away with six first-place medals, four seconds and two thirds.
For the Terrace boys, Donald Mingo went 4-0 with four pins and Frank Weiler finished 3-0 with two pins.
“He has really stepped up, had some nice shots and put the pressure on his opponents,” Terrace assistant coach Rick Pyorre said of Mingo.
Elijah Alvarez added a second-place medal after going 3-1 with two pins. Sterling Wong also finished second.
Third-place medals went to Jesse Lewis and Enzo Torres.
For the Terrace girls, Mavis Pyorre celebrated her birthday by going 4-0 with four pins, including a win over a middle school state placer from last year. Pyorre was serenaded with happy birthday sung by the crowd during the medal ceremony. “It was much appreciated,” Pyorre said of his daughter’s big day.
Other firsts went to Terrace’s Ashley Vasquez, who went 3-0 with two pins; Teagan Miller, who went 2-0 with two pins; and Carlie Green, who went 3-0 with one pin.
Silver medals went to Cheyenne Hayden and Merari Alvarez.
Also wrestling for the Vikings were Dominic Legendre, Raymond Gonzales-Shoaf, Mackenzie Markham and Delia Shirley.
“Everyone gave it their all, kept fighting and no one quit. That’s all I can ask,” said Terrace head coach Steve Fisher.
