CLEARLAKE >> Councilwoman Denise Loustalot announced her resignation at the Clearlake City Council on Thursday. She plans to vacate her seat by the end of the month.
The former mayor said her family is moving to a home just outside the city limits and therefore she can no longer serve. Her effective resignation date is March 25, coming in the last year of her first term.
“Family comes first,” Loustalot said. “I have to know that this happened for a reason and I’ll take it as it comes.”
Since being elected in 2012, she has been part of a council that was initially filled with strife but recently has made major steps to improve Clearlake with medical marijuana overhauls and code enforcement staffing.
Now, the council had to decide how she will be replaced. According to Loustalot, the body will determine that at their next regular meeting.
As for the departing councilwoman, the future isn’t clear. However, she said she will try to remain involved on the committees she was appointed to if it’s possible.
“I have really enjoyed everything, even the hard issues,” she said. “The absolutely wonderful people on staff, the council, and community members I didn’t know made it great to do the job I was elected to.”
She and her husband own the Big-O Tire and Enterprise Towing in Clearlake.
