KELSEYVILLE >> Morgan Profitt pitched a five-inning no-hitter and struck out eight as the Kelseyville Knights opened their rain-delayed 2016 softball season with a 14-0 non-league victory over the Upper Lake Cougars on Tuesday in Kelseyville.

“She pitched a very good game,” Kelseyville coach Jeff Bour said of his pitcher, who didn’t give up anything remotely close to a hit. “I’m very proud of her.”

Kelseyville (1-0) didn’t do a lot of hitting either but that will happen when the opposing pitchers are having trouble locating the plate. The Knights drew 14 bases on balls.

“We did a good job of running the bases and taking the extra base,” Bour said.

Kelseyville scored in every inning, including a five-run third and a six-run fourth. The game was stopped after 4 ½ innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Brendelyn Pelzel went 1-for-4 for the Knights with a two-run double to deep center field. Bailey Couey and Taylor Paulich had the other Kelseyville hits. Profitt helped her own cause with two RBIs.

“We’re learning, we’re still working,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said of her young squad.

Upper Lake is 1-2.
