Clearlake >> Due to the efforts of the early childhood education children’s literature class, a new Children’s Corner has been created at Lake County Campus of Woodland Community College.
The students chose to tackle this project through fundraisers and donations. They were able to raise $800 online and received $400 more from community donors. With that money they were able to purchase furniture and some books.
In addition to the fundraising, the project was approved for a $1,000 grant to help purchase more books. Other book donations were quickly collected from the Sonoma County Library, Lakeport Library, Redbud Library and Santa Rosa Library.
In total the students were able to collect or purchase 39 boxes of books, as well as a couch, table and chairs, an area rug, and a book display shelf. They worked with the campus library staff to ensure that the Children’s Corner would be in the appropriate place and that the furniture and colors of the rug would blend in with the rest of the library properly.
Dr. Laura Daly is proud of her students for taking on this project and completing it.
“Our children’s literature class took what we have learned through the semester and helped to make it accessible to our community. Books are for everyone, and it’s especially important for children to have access to books. Our campus library is now more complete because of the community spirit of our students.”
