COBB >> Lake County began abating the problems associated with septic tanks at the Hoberg’s Resort site on Friday, county officials said.

According to District 5 Supervisor Rob Brown, the county on Tuesday formally ordered the famous resort, which was largely destroyed during the Valley Fire, to handle a fire-damaged tank. It had reportedly started to overflow due to the recent rains. There were concerns on the county level that this had spilled into local drainage systems.

Hoberg’s management, Lake County Partners, had until 5 p.m. on Thursday to reply. According to county officials, the resort failed to respond by deadline.

“They were running into some difficulties,” Brown said, adding that representatives claimed that they were too busy to find a contractor. “For whatever the reason is, we need to act on it.”

When asked about the situation, Lake County Partners spokesperson Rob Muelrath blamed the situation on financial issues in the wake of the fire and the recent weather.

“Hoberg’s is cooperating with the county and they are doing what they can with the funding from the insurance to abate the waste issues,” Muelrath said. “It’s difficult when there’s very little money in the pot.”

Contracted for the job was Ken Gifford of Gifford’s Backhoe Service. Brown said that he should complete the work today, before the next rain event. The National Weather Service expects rain on Sunday.

“We’re confident that he’s going to get it done quickly,” he said.

Also involved in this issue is Cobb Area Water District as it currently is testing the water from the tank. Those results are pending, Brown said.
