LAYTONVILLE >> The Upper Lake Cougars lost two games and their third baseman on Friday while falling 6-3 and 8-7 to the Laytonville Warriors in a non-league softball doubleheader in Laytonville.
Upper Lake (1-3) had 18 hits to Laytonville’s six between the two games but couldn’t overcome errors (five in the first game) and walks (11 in the second game). To make matters worse, the Cougars’ third baseman was ejected for arguing a call in game one.
“The girl was out and the umpire called her safe,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said. “It wasn’t close.”
Julia Mooney was the losing pitcher in game one, striking out seven and walking five while going the distance. Adrianna Saldana, Cheyanne Obedoza, Jazlyn Bonilla and Katlyn Minnis had two hits apiece for the Cougars. Saldana and Obedoza added doubles.
In game two, which went only five innings, Laytonville took advantage of 10 walks in the first two innings to score all of its runs. Upper Lake closed to 8-7 with a four-run top of the third.
“I didn’t know the game was going to be five innings,” Coburn said. “That’s the rule in their league.”
Mooney, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief of starter Minnis, anchored the Upper Lake offense with two hits, one of them a three-run home run to deep right field in the third.
“She was at home before they got the ball back into the infield,” Coburn said.
Stacy Johnson went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Bailey Young went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Laytonville had just one hit.
