MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown’s Mustangs won a 3-2 pitcher’s duel against the Upper Lake Cougars in non-league softball action on Tuesday afternoon in Middletown.

Both pitchers tossed three-hitters. Winner Olivia Glosser also struck out eight and walked two while loser Julia Mooney struck out five and walked four.

“She kept pouring in strikes,” Middletown coach Barry Glosser said of his daughter’s complete-game effort. “Even the hits they got were little flares.”

What proved to be the game-winning run scored on Brittney Holt’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning, which boosted Middletown’s led to 3-1. Upper Lake closed to 3-2 in the top of the sixth but Glosser retired the Cougars in order in the seventh on a strikeout and two comebackers.

Hannah Flynn homered in the bottom of the second to give Middleotwn (4-2) a 2-1 lead.

Megan Franco and Cheyanne Obedoza had run-scoring hits for Upper Lake (1-4).

“Once we learn how to hit the ball a little we’ll be unstoppable,” Upper Lake coach Kelly Coburn said.

Middletown is off until March 30 when it hosts Willows at 4 p.m. The Mustangs open their North Central League I schedule the next day at home against Cloverdale, also at 4 p.m. Upper Lake doesn’t play again until April 6 when it hosts Esparto at 4 p.m.
