LAKEPORT >> Clear Lake defeated Upper Lake 19-0 in non-league junior varsity baseball action on March 18 in Lakeport. The game was called after 4 ½ innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Preston Jones went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Cardinals in their season opener while Brady McGuire went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Josh Damiata went 2-for-2 with two runs. Also contributing to the Cardinals’ 11-hit attack were Blair Hayes with a double and two RBIs and Jason Garrison and Brian Horn with one hit apiece.

Winning pitcher Kyle Ashworth worked the first two innings and allowed only one hit. Hayes went the next two innings and Jones finished up in the fifth. Hayes struck out three and Jones two.

“We’re a young team,” Clear Lake coach John Garrison said. “We started six freshmen and have good leadership from our sophomores. We’re pretty athletic at every position.”
