
LAKEPORT >> Wayne Breazeale of Kelseyville stood alone atop the pro division leader board on Friday after bringing another 29.88 pounds to the scales during the third and final round of the fourth annual WON BASS California Open pro/am at Konocti Vista Casino and Marina.
Breazeale finished the third-day competition with 85.06 pounds to win a new bass boat. After a slow start on Wednesday when he weighed in only 18.10 pounds, the veteran fisherman bolted up the standings and into second place on Thursday with 37.08 pounds, the big bag of the day. Another solid effort on Friday allowed him to nail down the victory.
Jeff Newby of Bakersfield, the leader after each of the first two rounds, fell to third place with 70.81 pounds. Slipping between Newby and Breazeale for second place was Greg Gutierrez of Red Bluff with 77.95 pounds.
Ryan Habernecht of Creswell, Oregon, came in fourth with 70.69 pounds and John Pearl of Upper Lake rounded out the top five with 68.09.
Dink Mendez of Campbell won a tight three-man race for the amateur division championship, finishing with 73.54 pounds and edging out second-round leader Kota Hamai of Japan with 71.17 pounds and Corey Vasquez of Tulare with 70.15.
The tournament produced seven bass weighing more than 10 pounds, including five on Thursday. The big fish was 11.2 pounds and caught by Jeff Gage, who finished sixth overall in the pro division, on Thursday.
The field included 152 fishermen – 76 pros and 76 amateurs. Pros finished with a different amateur each day and each boat shared its weight. There was a five-fish limit per boat.
