LITTLE RIVER >> Clear Lake High School’s golf team finished second behind undefeated Coastal Mountain Conference North leader Willits on Tuesday at Little River Golf Course on the Mendocino County coast.
“It was a gorgeous day,” said Kelseyville High School coach John Berry. “The course was in great shape and Little River did a nice job of hosting us.”
While Kelseyville competes in the CMC South, the Knights participated in Tuesday’s action just to get in a bit of work during spring break.
Willits finished with a score of 404 (the combined total of its four low rounds) while Clear Lake had 483 and Fort Bragg 497. Kelseyville was incomplete (fewer than four golfers).
The low round among North golfers belong to Anthony Sorace of Willits with a 94 on the par-71 course. Low round overall went to Kelseyville’s Matt Wotherspoon with a 76 that featured a pair of birdies.
Clear Lake, which was minus more than half its squad because of spring break, was led by Dylan McGuire’s 112, just a shot in front of teammate Mike Camacho at 113.
“That was Dylan’s best score,” Clear Lake coach Ted Mattila said.
Willits is 6-0 in the North standings through three matches. Clear Lake is next at 3-3 followed by Fort Bragg at 0-6.
The CMC North teams return to action on April 6 at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain, which will host the CMC South schools on the same day. Kelseyville, Middletown and the other South schools also have a match today at Foxtail South in Rohnert Park beginning at 1:30 p.m.
In a CMC North match played last week at Buckingham, Willits won with 428 followed by Clear Lake with 467 and Fort Bragg with 530.
Sorace and Price Runberg of Willits had the low rounds with 100 and 102, respectively. Camacho led Clear Lake with 110 while teammates McGuire, Terra Morin and Brenden Allen all had 119.

Anderson Valley 7, Clear Lake 4
At Boonville, the Clear Lake High School junior varsity baseball team dropped a non-league decision to the Anderson Valley Panthers on Friday despite a 3-for-4 day at the plate by Preston Jones, who also doubled and drove in two runs. Blair Hayes went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Chris White also had a pair of hits.
Clear Lake starting pitcher Jason Garrison had to leave the game after only one inning with a sore arm. He was relieved by Kyle Ashworth, who worked the next three innings and took the loss. Hayes finished up on the mound.
“They (Panthers) exposed some things we need to work on,” Clear Lake coach John Garrison said. “Overall I thought we did a pretty good job. Our pitchers challenged their hitters and we had only three walks.”
Clear Lake tried to rally in the seventh and scored two runs before the game ended.
“We left the bases loaded and just ran out of outs,” Garrison said. “Our guys kept fighting. They showed me something in the seventh.”
